In a country where the majority of people struggle with high out-of-pocket healthcare costs and insurance penetration is only 1%, leaving over 42 million Ugandans uninsured, the four young entrepreneurs believe this is the most difficult challenge to fix.
“Over 40 million Ugandans are caught off guard because they are unprepared to cover medical expenditures,” says Emmanuel Twesigye, a passionate young entrepreneur with extensive expertise in the credit business and cofounder/CEO of Everlend.
In 2021, the Daily Monitor published a tale about a pregnant woman named Anita Mushieimana who travelled to Kitwe Health Centre IV (Ntungamo area) to give birth, but when she arrived, she gave birth at the gate since she had failed to pay UGX 50,000 to be admitted to the delivery Ward. This is where the Peleyta Health founders get their inspiration.
“We believe that no one should have to go without healthcare because of budgetary constraints.” —Says Douglas, Peleyta’s team head, who also manages a very successful startup sportrise and has extensive experience in the healthcare field.
Uganda is the only country in East Africa without a national healthcare insurance program, with a population of over 45 million people.
Peleyta Health enables uninsured low- and middle-income earners to save as little as UGx500/= per year for healthcare.
“With Peleyta Health, you can utilize your saved cash to pay off medical bills or purchase medication at our registered healthcare facilities.” Your savings account can also earn interest. And if a medical expense exceeds your saved funds, we can top up for you and you Pe-ley-ta (Pay later) in installments,” adds MacDanson, Peleyta’s Chief Technology Officer. MacDanson is also notable for helping hundreds of clinics and hospitals digitize their operations by developing famous Clinic/Hospital information management software – Clinic Plus – with his team at Nugsoft Technologies.
Peleyta services are currently available via their website via internet, and the team hopes to expand their services via mobile money in the near future.
Peleyta Health additionally allows their consumers to connect with a 24-hour specialist or video see a specific doctor.
