Residents of Kinyabwamba-Kahembe village in Kitswamba Sub- County, Kasese district are in shock when a senior student from Hima Progressive High School in Hima Town Council was discovered hiding in the jungle with her newborn child.
Last Thursday, the teen gave birth to a baby girl and hid her in the shrubs near her house. She managed to conceal her pregnancy from both her parents and the school officials.
Willy Biswalima, a 35-year-old man who has since fled to Kampala, is suspected of being the father of the child. She became pregnant in August of last year but was afraid to tell her parents because of their reaction.
After self-delivery in the bush, the minor confessed that she would feed the baby water laced with sugar before going to class in the morning and returning at break time to breastfeed it.
On Sunday morning, however, her luck ran out when her grandfather heard the infant wailing in the bush and informed local officials and locals.
Ellen Biira, the girl’s mother, revealed that she was unaware of her daughter’s pregnancy and was surprised when she claimed the baby as soon as it was discovered.
According to Patience Keren, Acting Head Teacher at Hima Progressive High School, the school is prepared to assist the adolescent in continuing her studies. She went on to say that they want the youngster to serve as an example for other students who would have been able to produce to understand that their circumstances should not prevent them from achieving their goals.
