A man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempted murder by the Bubulo Chief Magistrate Court. (A man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for chopping off a girl’s hand)
Derick Kuloba, 27, of Bududa district, was found guilty of chopping off 6-year-old Evelyn Namasopo’s hand in a bush after she turned down his marriage proposal.
Namasopo, a former student of Bushiyi Christian Secondary School and a resident of Nabweya sub-county in Bududa district, was attacked in July last year near a forest on her way home to pick up food for her hospitalized mother.
The victim has been receiving treatment at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for over a year.
The Bubulo Chief Magistrate, Esther Nalungi, stated in her ruling on Tuesday afternoon that Kuloba wasted the court’s time by showing no remorse for his actions.
She also ordered that the victim be compensated in the amount of 50 million shillings.
According to Nalungi, the 15-year prison sentence will assist the convict in reforming and returning to society as a better person.
“The convict is now 27 years old; this sentence allows him to return to society while still young and reformed, while also serving as an example to the youth not to commit similar crimes,” Nalungi ruled.
Kuloba has been on remand for four months, the maximum period for a convict.
Geoffrey Nappa, the defense lawyer, stated that they would file an appeal because the magistrate who delivered the judgment differed from the one who heard the case. (A man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for chopping off a girl’s hand –celebrity jazz Ug 2022,
