Tears as over 2500 Masaka residents fail to join the army

The Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) recruitment exercise in the Masaka subregion ended in tears, with 2,763 applicants rejected due to fake documents, poor hygiene, deformities, scars, tattoos, eye and dental defects, and other issues. The recruitment exercise in Masaka City concluded on Wednesday, with over 3000 people showing up to express their desire to join the national army, but only 327 passing the test.

Some applicants were seen crying after being rejected.

“What am I going to tell my siblings now that I’ve left home after assuring them that I’m joining the army?” As tears streamed down Christopher Ssebulime’s cheeks, a 23-year-old Kimaanya resident, said.

There was an overwhelming number of applicants, according to Capt. Ninisiima Rwemijuma, the spokesperson for Masaka-based Armoured Brigade-Kasijjagirwa Kasijagirwa.

“We would have loved to take all of them,” he explained, “but some failed the test to be enlisted as servicemen.”

The exercise, held at Masaka Recreation Grounds, drew applicants from Masaka, Kalungu, Lwengo, Sembabule, Gomba, Butambala, Kalangala, Bukomansimbi, Rakai, Lyantonde, and Kyotera districts.

“Some of those we chased away had come from other parts of the country,” he added, “but the first priority was for those from the Masaka subregion.”

Some of the disqualified recruits claimed that the National Identity Card registration process occurred while they were still studying in other areas, despite the fact that they are Masaka residents.

“I was born in Masaka, but by the time the national identity card registration exercise was underway, I was still a student in Mbarara, and I registered from there,” explained Samuel Ssekidde, a Masaka City resident.

Brig Gen Martin Ndyanabo, the head of the recruitment exercise in the Masaka subregion, explained that each district is assigned a quota based on population, and those from Mbarara, located in Western Uganda, could not be recruited in Masaka.

“Many young people wanted to join the national army, but we can’t go around the rules and do what they want.” “Every step must be taken precisely,” he stated.
