Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine is currently the President of the National Unity Platform NUP.

Robert Kyagulanyi was born in Nkozi Hospital, where his mother worked, and grew up in the Kamwokya slum in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city.

He declared his candidacy for the 2021 Ugandan presidential election in June 2019. He ran in the 2021 election and was defeated by incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, a result that Kyagulanyi and a large section of the public strongly contested.

The Ugandan government placed him under house arrest on December 14, 2021. He has not stopped protesting his arrest.

Childhood and education

His mother worked at Nkozi Hospital, where Kyagulanyi was born.

He grew up in the Kamwokya slum, which is located in the northeastern part of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city.

Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine received his Uganda Certificate of Education in 1996 from Kitante Hill School, and his Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education in 1998 from Kololo Senior Secondary School. He then went on to Makerere University in Kampala, where he studied music, dance, and drama, earning a diploma in 2003.

Kyagulanyi returned to university in 2016 to pursue a law degree at the International University of East Africa.

Bobi Wine’s career in entertainment

In the early 2000s, Kyagulanyi began his music career under the stage name Bobi Wine. His first singles, “Akagoma,” “Funtula,” and “Sunda” (featuring Ziggy D), propelled him to prominence in the East African music scene.

His music has been described as reggae, dancehall, and afrobeat, with a strong social message. He was the leader of the group Fire Base Crew, until its disbandment, at which point he formed the Ghetto Republic of Uganja, Over the course of 15 years, he has released over 70 songs.

His song “Kiwani” was featured on the soundtrack for the Disney film Queen of Katwe in 2016.

Bobi Wine’s primary musical genre has always been Afrobeat. The late Kasiwukira sold and promoted Bobi Wine’s music. Kasiwukira acknowledged receiving 60 million dollars from his music sales in just one month.

He has tens of millions of views on his fully monetized YouTube channel. He has held numerous concerts and performances, as well as brand endorsements, all of which generate income for him. He owns FireBase Records, a commercial production studio in Kamwokya.

A career in film

Kyagulanyi is also a film actor, primarily appearing in Ugandan films. He was cast in Cleopatra Kyoheirwe’s drama film Yogera in 2010. In 2015, he co-starred with Hellen Lukoma in the Twaweza-supported film Situka. He has also contributed to several other films, including Divizionz.

Kyagulanyi announced his candidacy for parliament in a by-election for the Kyadondo County East constituency in April 2017. His door-to-door walking campaign drew attention both in Uganda and internationally.

He easily defeated two experienced candidates, Sitenda Sebalu of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Apollo Kantinti of the main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)

In 2018, Kyagulanyi rose to prominence by championing the victories of the candidates he campaigned for in most by-elections, defeating NRM and FDC candidates.

Personal existence

While attending Makerere University, Kyagulanyi met his wife, Barbara Itungo, who was an S6 student at Bweranyangi Girls’ Senior Secondary School at the time. After ten years of living together, they married in August 2011. They have four kids.

Kyagulanyi’s father died on February 10, 2015, following a long battle with diabetes.

Presidential election in 2021

Kyagulanyi formally announced his candidacy for president in the 2021 general election on July 24, 2019.

On 22 July 2020, he announced that he had joined the National Unity Platform party, and that he would be its president and presidential flag-bearer in the upcoming general election in February 2021.

Kyagulanyi was formally nominated to run for the highest office in the land on November 3, 2020. Kyagulanyi was arrested by the Ugandan military shortly after his nomination.

He launched his campaign manifesto in Mbarara (western Uganda) on November 6, 2020, after state operatives cordoned off his NUP party offices, preventing him from doing so as planned.

Ssentamu was arrested in Luuka District (Eastern Uganda) on November 18, 2020, and detained for three days at Nalufenya Police Station in Jinja. “Police accused Mr. Kyagulanyi of having more than 200 supporters recommended by the EC to contain further spread of Covid-19,” according to the Daily Monitor.

His arrest sparked widespread protests across the country, primarily in Kampala, Masaka, Jinja, Mukono, Mbale, and Wakiso. Although Ugandan police claimed that only 54 people were killed, human rights activists believe that more than 100 people were killed and several others were injured.

During the subsequent protests, over 2000 people were imprisoned.

Francis Senteza, Wine’s bodyguard, was killed on December 27, 2020, after being run over by a military police truck. He was attacked while assisting in the transport of a journalist who had been critically injured by tear gas during an earlier clash between police and a group of Bobi Wine supporters. In the incident, another journalist was also injured.

Museveni was re-elected with 58.6 percent of the vote, according to the electoral commission, on January 16. Wine refused to accept the results, claiming that it was the most rigged election in Ugandan history.

Wine was placed under house arrest on January 15, shortly after voting in the presidential election. Despite Wine’s claims that he has run out of food, the military surrounded his home and refused to let anyone in or out for several days. As the military blocked the convoy, the US ambassador to Uganda, Natalie E. Brown, was not allowed to visit or leave food for him.

Bobi Wine was released on January 26 after the Ugandan High Court ordered the end of his house arrest.
