The Speaker of Parliament has insisted that the Nyege Nyege Festival 2022 is still on hold despite Prime Minister Hon. Robinah Nabbanja’s approval for it to go as scheduled.
In a video posted on Wednesday, Hon. Nabbanja said that permission had been granted for Nyege Nyege, the most awaited event in Africa, to take place at Itanda Falls in Jinja from September 15–18.
The internet was flooded with compliments for the prime minister, and many netizens thanked her for authorizing the event, much to the delight of the partygoers.
The Tororo Woman MP Hon. Sarah Opendi further undermined the festival during Thursday’s parliamentary session, so the fun may be fleeting.
Hon. Opendi, who thinks the festival is a haven for immorality, asserted that there are alternative methods to promote tourism and culture besides through such an event.
The Hon. Sarah Opendi is said to have commented, “We cannot have individuals drinking all day and all night in this country as if they have no work to do.”
The Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Chris Baryomunsi, responded by stating that “the NRM government is of the view that Ugandans should freely enjoy their nation but within the law.”
However, the Speaker emphatically asserted that the decisions of the Parliament will not be overturned as long as she is still the Speaker, calling into question his remarks.
“I want to remind this house that as long as I am a speaker, nobody will ever run this house. Nobody! You won’t take over the Ugandan parliament if you believe you will. She firmly asserted, “415 Members of Parliament elected me.
Before requesting that the Executive “play its share,” she stressed that the earlier decision by parliament to halt the festival remains in effect.
“The Parliament’s resolution regarding Nyege Nyege is still in effect. The Executive must play a role. Let the Executive do what they choose; we made the announcement on our behalf. – Hon.
