At least 38 university students have been arrested by police at parliament today for protesting rising commodities prices and human rights violations in the country.(38 University Students Arrested in Parliament for Protesting Rising Commodity Prices)
Students from Makerere University, Kyambogo University, and other universities were among those forcefully arrested by police before they could reach parliament.
The police did not disclose grounds for their arrests, but they were all kept at the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala, where they were still being held at the time of publication.
It should be mentioned that prices for petrol, food, bread, soap, salt, and other basic items have been soaring since the beginning of this year, causing widespread outrage.
Protesters had chained themselves as a show of dissatisfaction.
Commodity prices began to rise soon after fuel costs surged a few months earlier.
Despite the public outrage, the administration has yet to issue an official comment about the troubling economic situation.
According to some media sources, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently counseled Ugandans to learn to live with the current economic condition, citing the COVID-19 pandemic as having a negative influence on the country’s economy.
