Controversial Ugandan writer and author, Kankwenza Rukirabashaija has finally been granted bail albeit under extremely tough conditions.
During his bail hearing on Tuesday at Buganda Road Court, the chief Magistrate, Dr. Douglas Singuza pointed out that on top of presenting credible sureties, it is his belief that expensive bail conditions are not even necessary hence releasing the writer on bail.
“The accused person has presented credible sureties some of whom are lawyers while others are political leaders of one of the political parties. Given the circumstances of this case, it is my considered view that it is not even necessary to consider expensive bail conditions in monetray terms. I therefore release the accused person on bail.” he said.
He however forbade lawyers from.both the state and that of the accused from discussing the details of the bail terms with the media.
“All perties in this case are specifically barred from discussing this matter in the media. Particularly the accused person and the defence are advised not do discuss this matter in the media as a breach of this condition will lead to automatic collapse of the bail.” Singiza added.
Kakwenza, who is being acccused of abusing President Museveni and his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba on Twitter has had his case postponed till February the first for mention.
