The Makerere University community is mourning the death of a student who died of a diabetic crisis, according to authorities. ( A Makerere student passes away just weeks before graduation)
Petrinah Babirye, a 24-year-old student at the College of Computing and Information Sciences, was found dead. Babirye was scheduled to graduate on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, according to the college president, Mr Joseph Mbusa.
“We have lost a student identified as Petrinah Babirye, a computer science student who was scheduled to graduate on Wednesday next week.” Mr Mbusa told the Daily Monitor yesterday that she died of diabetes on May 16 at 10 p.m. at Nsambya hospital
Babirye used to be one of the best students in the class, according to him.
Babirye and I were classmates, and she was a very clever student, as she was the third best in our class. “We have lost a really brilliant person,” he added in a telephone interview yesterday.
“Babirye was such a hardworking student, she did so well in class with a CGPA of 4.38, she will be sorely missed, and may her soul rest in eternal peace,” he continued. Ms Shamim Nambassa, the university guild president, told Monitor in a phone interview yesterday that the students’ body organized a vigil in honor of the deceased yesterday in Kisaasi, a Kampala suburb, which will be buried today in her home district of Jinja.

“It is really tragic that we have lost a student who was waiting for her graduation day, which is a week away,” Ms. Nambassa added.
