Mukono District police have arrested two suspects in connection with an aggravated robbery at a supermarket in the district. (Two people have been arrested for robbing a supermarket at gunpoint )
The thugs are part of a larger gang that raided Spice Supermarket with guns on June 25, 2022 at night in Namubiru ward, Mukono Central Division, Mukono Municipality.
Thugs attacked the supermarket with an AK47 rifle on Friday, shooting and injuring the cashier before robbing an unspecified amount of money. Other customers collapsed after hearing gunshots.
Mugalu William, 24, of Nasuuti cell, Ntawo ward, Mukono Central, and Mbogo Sam, 23, of Nasuuti cell, Ntawo ward, Mukono municipality, have been identified as the suspects.
According to police spokesperson Fred Enanga, one of the victims at the supermarket recognized the suspects.
He claims the thugs were spotted drinking at Cloud 9 bar on the eve of the robbery, annexing the supermarket.
Enanga explains that the thugs were apprehended by a joint security team comprised of the Flying Squad Unit and Mukono Police, and that a search is now underway for the gun used in the crime as well as other members of the gang, who he claims appeared to be a professional team based on their speed.
He goes on to say that a team of counselors from CID Headquarters has been dispatched to provide counseling to the cashier after a gun was pointed to her head.
“We thank her for doing the right thing by doing exactly what the thugs told her to do when they forced her to open the till and deposit all the money in their bag.
Enanga has warned that, while supermarket attacks have not been as frequent, retail crimes on supermarkets, mobile money points, retail shops, and markets, among other places, are on the rise.
He attributes this trend to high levels of youth unemployment, drug use, a shift in criminal tactics in which robbers attack softer targets with less security, such as supermarkets, and the opportunity to flee.
Enanga goes on to say that the thugs have learned to use guns, knives, machetes, screwdrivers, and other sharp objects.
“Unless the various issues are addressed, retail businesses remain vulnerable, necessitating the deployment of sufficient private security guards, CCTV, body cameras, activating alarms, and connecting them to police stations.” He elaborates.
