Dr. Flavian Zeija, the Principal Judge, escaped assassination on Saturday evening after unknown gunmen fired shots at his convoy.
The event occurred around 7 p.m. on Saturday evening along the Kampala-Masaka Highway, according to a statement from the Judiciary.
The statement reads, “Thankfully, the primary Judge and his entire staff fled the situation unharmed.”
The incident has been labeled “barbaric” by the judiciary.
“This was a cowardly crime, and we are convinced that the offenders will be brought to justice at the proper time.” “Investigations into the event have begun by the Uganda Police Force,” the statement adds.
On December 25, 2019, Dr. Flavian Zeija, a lawyer, academic, and judge on Uganda’s High Court, was appointed as the country’s Principal Judge.
A Principal Judge is in charge of overseeing the High Court judges, including the delegation of responsibilities to members of the Court. The Magistrates Courts below the High Court are also under the supervision of the Principal Judge.
After the Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice, the Principal Judge is the third highest ranking member of the judiciary.
