Buganda Kingdom Premier Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has urged the government to provide equitable pay to both Arts and Science teachers in order to end the current school strike.

He gave the advice while speaking to the Buganda Lukiiko on Monday. According to Owk. Mayiga, arts teachers are just as important to the nation as science teachers because professions in different fields of study complement each other.

When scientists develop medicines, they need people like accountants, marketers, human resource managers, and others from the arts, according to the Katikkiro.

Mayiga stated that the government must begin addressing the huge disparities in the existing government salary structures as soon as possible. He claims that this will help to resolve the widespread strikes by civil servants who are paid differently but work at the same level.

Teachers in Uganda’s National Teachers Union laid down their weapons in order to force the government to provide them with equitable pay across the board. The strike continues, despite threats from various government officials to remove teachers from the payroll if they do not return to class.

In a circular sent to teachers last week, Catherine Bitarakwate, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Service, gave striking teachers two days to return to work or resign.

According to Bitarakwate, teachers who fail to report for duty after two days will be considered absent and may be dropped from the payroll. She directed Chief Administrative Officers and town clerks to conduct inspections and record the absences of teachers.
