A boda-boda rider in Namugongo, Kira-municipality, Wakiso district, allegedly committed suicide due to his inability to repay his motorcycle loan of Shs 255,000. (Namugongo Boda-Boda Rider Suicides Due to Shs 255000 Loan )
Alex Nuwagaba’s lifeless body was discovered outside his Namugongo rental house by his neighbors today.
One of the deceased’s relatives told Kira police detectives that Nuwagaba had been agitated for several days, lamenting his inability to clear his loan and how his loaning company, Boda-Banja in Ntinda, was not giving him any breathing space and had even impounded the motorcycle.
Apart from the pressure from the motorcycle loaning company, the 33-year-old rider who was a member of the Namugongo-Njanda stage, near the Catholic shrine, had other family-related issues, according to Bosco Buziba, the chairperson of boda-boda riders in Kira municipality.
“He was having other problems, his landlord was chasing him out of the house after four months of not paying rent,” Buziba continued. But another issue he once told me about was three girlfriends who all claimed to be pregnant for him. And everyone desired marriage before having children.”
Buziba explains that Nuwagaba obtained the motorcycle with the registration number UFL 512M from a friend only identified as Herbert, who had a national identification card, and it was Herbert who had been clearing the loan per week, but for the last three weeks his friend decided to eat the money, prompting the company to impound the motorcycle.
“Herbert was not paying the weekly agreed part of the loan to the company for the last three months, and the money amounted to Shs 255,000, which caused the company to recover the motorcycle yesterday,” he continued. “He didn’t leave a message, but we know that was the problem with ending his life,” he explained.
Bruham Kateregga, a close friend of the deceased, said the situation was unfortunate because the deceased was working and needed to clear the motorcycle, only to be disappointed by his friend.
However, Buziba claimed that it was unfair for the motorcycle loaning company to seize the motorcycle after only three months of late payments, despite the fact that he had paid the previous four months on time.
