A passenger boat with an unknown number of passengers capsized on Lake Victoria in the Kalangala Islands. On Wednesday night, the ill-fated boat sank while ferrying passengers from Kasenyi landing place in Katabi town council, Wakiso district, to Kisaba island in Kalangala district. According to preliminary indications from fishermen, the boat may have broken down after fishing nets were entangled in its motor. According to Moses Musiitwa, a fisherman at Kasenyi landing location, the boat capsized between Lukuba and Misenyi island after being battered by strong lake winds.
“The lake has been experiencing unusually high gusts since Saturday, which generally result in big waves.” “Because the boat couldn’t float freely when the motor stopped, this could have exacerbated the issue,” he said.
According to Musiitwa, despite the fact that several fishermen responded to the situation, they were unable to save anyone alive. He does, however, believe that some people may have escaped to the floating rock near the region where the tragedy occurred.
According to Kalangala LC V chairperson Rajab Ssemakula and Julius Kawalya, one of the inhabitants, the boat could have capsized with more than 25 people, despite the fact that some of the passengers apparently disembarked at the Lukuba landing place in Kalangala.
Saidi Kayongo, the Kasenyi landing site’s LC I chairperson, says he has yet to know how many people boarded the boat on Wednesday. Alfred Jakech, a marine officer assigned to the Kalangala marine office, informed URN that they were on their way to the Lukuba landing spot.
“I’ve only heard of one survivor,” he continued, “but we’ll figure out how many people were on board and how many survived or killed.”
Following a boat tragedy on Lake Victoria that killed 31 people in November 2018, President Yoweri Museveni ordered “the electronic registration and surveillance of all the boats so that we can know who is where on the lake and why.” (Over 25 people are believed to be dead as a boat capsizes L Victoria celebrity jazz ug)
