Rolex Initiative Uganda has organized the dynamic Rolex festival for six years, a celebration of the street delicacy “Rolex,” which has become a meal and a national identifier for Uganda.
During a press conference, the organizers announced that another food event aimed at promoting local food and beverage tourism, dubbed ‘Feast on Loco,’ will be held in the second week of November 2022 at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala.
The celebration, according to Jonathan Nalebo, MD of Rolex Initiative Uganda, aims to advance indigenous dining experiences in five-star hotels and restaurants.
“Most high-end dining spaces sell us an exotic culture, and we want our cultural identity to be sold to international visitors through meals and beverages,” Nalebo explained.
Culinary tourism, also known as food tourism or gastronomy tourism, is the study of food for the purpose of tourism.
Tourists enjoy eating out, and “food is thought to rank alongside climate, accommodation, and scenery” in importance to them.
This unique sector contributes more than a billion dollars globally, despite the fact that it has gone untapped and underfunded by governments and development partners.
Uganda is home to over 52 ethnic groups, each with its own distinct meal and drink, ranging from malakwanga to eshabwe, emboli, and Lubombo.
The Rolex Festival will also take place on Sunday, August 21st, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cricket Oval in Lugogo. The fees are Shs 10k for regular admission and Shs 30k for VIP admission. (The Rolex Festival is back with a vengeance – celebrity jazz ug )
