This Friday the Clothed with Protection Art Project will present a sensitization show at the National Theatre
Protected by Clothing Is a new art project by Luke Jerram that aims to raise awareness about the necessity of maternal vaccination in order to save premature newborns. The major event will take place at National Theater on Friday. (This Friday the Clothed with Protection Art Project will present a sensitization show at the National Theatre)
In cooperation with Dr Chrissie Jones and supported by the IMPRINT Network, Luke Jerram is working with IGC Fashion to commission and select the work of ten young and dynamic Ugandan fashion designers for a catwalk at the National Theatre in Kampala on Friday.
The garments will thereafter be displayed in a touring exhibition in the United Kingdom. Vaccinations provide a layer of protection against illnesses, similar to how clothes shield us from the outside environment, whether from harsh temperatures, rain, or abrasion.
We are developing an exhibition of apparel that encourages immunization in pregnant women across Africa by commissioning ten fashion designers in Kampala, Uganda. We want to get the word out that immunization protects both the mother and the child. “Vaccination provides protection for both you and your child.”
Far too many newborns die in their first few months of life, especially in low- and middle-income nations. Many people die from diseases that could have been avoided if they had been vaccinated throughout pregnancy and childhood. Antibodies are passed from mother to kid across the placenta in the later stages of pregnancy. Vaccination during pregnancy accelerates this natural process, protecting the baby in the first weeks of life.
Vaccinations provide a layer of protection against illness, similar to how clothes shield us from the elements, whether it’s from high heat, rain, or abrasion.
The apparel will be shown as part of a catwalk show and community event in Kampala, and will then be turned into an exhibition that will tour the UK. For this project, we’re working with a diverse group of designers, including IGC Fashion, which is also assisting with coordination on the ground in Uganda. The designers specialize in creating apparel out of repurposed fabrics that is both stunning and unique.
Each designer is dedicated to involving and empowering their community in order to effect positive change.
Cinematic Media videotaped the project’s voyage, and this film, along with the costumes and preparatory sketches, will constitute a touring exhibition that will be shown in museums across the UK.
