Kenyan singer Esther Akoth, also known as Akothee in the entertainment industry, has shared her academic papers on social media. The self-proclaimed president of single mothers posted what appeared to be a Bachelor of Business Management degree from Mount Kenya University in a video on her Instagram stories. “I DON’T WANT TO HEAR SOMEONE SAYING I DON’T HAVE THE (ACADEMIC) PAPERS,” SHE BRAGGED. MY MOTHER WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO REST. ALLOW ME TO SEE MY SCHOOLMASTERS.”

The announcement comes three months after the 39-year-old businesswoman discussed the difficulties of pursuing education at an advanced age. “The issues I’m dealing with during menopause,” she explained. “When I should have been in school, I decided to be a wife.” Instead of being a wife, I am now an elderly student. There is no balance in this life; waking up at 4:30 a.m. has become the norm. “This is the year.” The Sweet Love hitmaker later dedicated the diploma to her mother. “But I need to get my degree for my mother, so she’s glad to have that graduation gown in her house.”

Akothee has previously discussed how she struggled to make ends meet as a young mother with children. She then managed to enroll her children in some of the best schools in the country and has never been shy about bragging about it. “I am a mother of five, and despite the fact that I gave birth with mzungus (white men), they do not fully support me; it is only baba Oyoo, the young boy, who supports his son; the other four are mine and mine alone.” I am the sole provider for my children. “My daughter Fancy Makadia is in Braeburn and pays Sh800,000 per term; the other two are in Strathmore and you know how the school fees are there,” she explained on NTV’s Wicked Edition.

Akothee’s decision to make her academic papers public comes at a time when a number of prominent politicians, including Johnson Sakaja, Cleophas Malala, and Wavinya Ndeti, are facing questions about the legitimacy of their degrees.
