In response to a widely shared video showing a lecturer striking a female student for using a phone in class, Makerere University has issued a statement.
The administration of Ivory Tower announced over the weekend that it has “instituted processes that should lead us to take the required disciplinary measures against the academics involved in this tragic episode.
The academic staff should make students feel protected and directed by their high standards.
Why Did the Makerere lecturer slap the Female Student
The Makerere University Management has expressed remorse over a video that surfaced on social media of an altercation between a student and a professor that led to the professor hitting the student.
We vehemently oppose the instructor’s behavior because it violates a number of university regulations.
The faculty’s actions are reprehensible and reflect a misuse of the power granted to him to support and mentor students as they pursue knowledge at our illustrious university.
We have put in place procedures that should enable us to discipline the professors responsible for this regrettable episode. The academic staff should make students feel protected and directed by their high standards.

The impacted student has been contacted by the director of gender mainstreaming, who has expressed our regret and pledged to look into the situation as thoroughly as possible.
As additional efforts are taken to address this event, we will keep the university community and the general public informed.

Who is the Lecturer who slapped the Makerere Student?
The Lecturer who slapped the female student is known as Mr. Wandera Benard a lecturer of Department of social Work and Social Administration within the school of Social Sciences.
What Happened to the Lecturer who slapped the female Makerere University Student?
The office of the Vice Chancellor Makerere University immediately stopped Mr. Benard Wandera from work. And was instructed to hand over all the University belongings. This Interdiction took immediate effect as of yesterday 19th Nov 2022.
